SYTYCD Season 9: Top 14 Performances – Music and Instant Thoughts!

Group dance: Top 141
Style: Contemporary
Choreographer: Mia Michaels
Song: Active Child – Hanging On Hanging On - You Are All I See (Deluxe Version)

Dancers: Cyrus & Eliana
Originally: Stephen “Twitch” Boss & Katee Shean (Season 4)
Song: Duffy – “Mercy” Mercy - Rockferry
Instant Thoughts: I really like how Cyrus emulated his character in this piece, I felt like he really made it his own. I didn’t have trouble seeing this as Cyrus / Eliana as opposed to Twitch / Katee. The chemistry between the two was there. I felt that Cyrus slipped up a couple of times here and there… and consequently it felt like Eliana was covering for him here and there… but other than that I really like how this came out.

Dancers: George & Tiffany
Originally: Joshua Allen & Katee Shean (Season 4)
Song: Adele – “Hometown Glory” Hometown Glory - 19
Instant Thoughts: There were a few moments that it didn’t felt like they were a couple dancing a piece together. As one of the judges mentioned sometimes it felt like two solos that just happen to be dancing in the same space. I felt myself watching George far more than Tiffany so this piece did him justice. There was something about Tiffany that was off for me… but I can’t seem to pin it.

Dancers: Will & Amelia
Originally: Evan Kasprzak & Randi Evans (Season 5)
Song: Koop feat. Ane Brun – “Koop Island Blues” Koop Island Blues - Buddha Bar IX
Instant Thoughts: When I realized what piece Amelia and Will was going to do I was excited, because I thought this was right up Amelia’s alley, I was more worried about Will being able to turn on the charm like Evan did. Instead I found myself watching Will at times more than Amelia, which I thought was disappointing.

Dancers: Dareian & Janelle
Originally: Stephen “Twitch” Boss & Kherington Payne (Season 4)
Song: John Mayer – “Dreaming with a Broken Heart” Dreaming With a Broken Heart - Continuum
Instant Thoughts: Dareian’s feet are very distracting… and Janelle… I felt that she connected the best but considering she had something to draw from it wasn’t too difficult. Dareian performed well too… but there was still something lacking between the two here.

Dancers: Matthew & Audrey
Originally: Neil Haskell & Lacey Schwimmer (Season 3)
Song: Billy Porter – “Time” Time (Live) - At the Corner of Broadway and Soul (Live)
Instant Thoughts: I haven’t been feeling this couple for a very long time, and this hasn’t changed much with this routine. However, for some reason I am drawn more to Audrey in this case than Matthew, but then again Audrey emoted quite a bit in this routine.

Dancers: Chehon & Witney
Originally: Travis Wall & Heidi Groskreutz (Season 2)
Song: Celine Dion – “Calling You” (There is no individual track so here is the karaoke Calling You (Rendu célèbre par Céline Dion) [Version karaoké] - Hits Céline Dion, Vol. 1)
Instant Thoughts: This is probably one of the routines that I felt really did justice not only to the original but to themselves in this “update” of the routine from how many years ago. I love Chehon, I really do… and Witney I felt shined in this routine as well.

Dancers: Cole & Lindsay
Originally: Kūpono Aweau & Kayla Radomski (Season 5)
Song: Sara Bareilles – “Gravity” Gravity - Little Voice
Instant Thoughts: Oh. Em. Gee. Cole’s stone cold facial expression really sold this piece for me. Who knew? I didn’t really felt it as much the first time around, but dammit this really did for me. I don’t know what to do about this… Cole was just amazingly heartbreakingly cold to Lindsay and it just went to town.

SOLOS
Amelia Lowe: Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova – “Falling Slowly” Falling Slowly - Once (Music from the Motion Picture)
Janelle Issis: Elie Attieh – “Inta Omri” Inta omri - Oasis Lounge - By DJ Markarian
Lindsey Arnold: Club des Belugas – “Hip Hip Chin Chin” Hip Hip Chin Chin - Palace Lounge Presents: Café D'Afrique, Vol. 3
George Lawrence, Jr.: Explosions In the Sky – “So Long, Lonesome” So Long, Lonesome - All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone
Dareian Kujawa: Joshua Ledet – “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World” It's a Man's Man's Man's World (American Idol Performance) - It's a Man's Man's Man's World (American Idol Performance) - Single
Matthew Kazmierczak: Damien Rice – “Delicate” Delicate - O (Deluxe Version)

My life can be summed up in the following two quotes: 1) "I am married to engineering and am its faithful wife by day, but at night my wanderlust takes hold and the arts becomes my jealous paramour." and... 2) "Engineering is my safety net. Writing is my passion. Acting is my escape when the other two become too much." So where does dancing fit in? Pretty much anywhere at this point... =)

A Chance to Dance Online Stream

As I mentioned previously, since many of our readers don’t likely have the OvationTV channel in their homes, A Chance to Dance has an online streaming option through Milyoni that will be available at https://www.facebook.com/OvationTV. It will also be available as video-on-demand and TV Everywhere if you have those.

The show premieres Friday, August 17th at 7 PM PT / 10 PM ET. The online stream is available for only $1.00 per episode or $11.99 for a seven-episode bundle and will be shown simultaneously on American TV and Facebook. I think that’s an entertainment industry first for a TV show like this to be shown online and on TV at the same time. Plus, the Facebook viewer will have online access to an exclusive interview with Nigel Lythgoe.

Also, if you saw my previous Chance to Dance post, you’ll want to see Michael and Billy Dancing 2-step at the Broken Spoke in Texas.

This quote from Nigel has me excited to see the full series:

“A CHANCE TO DANCE shows the passion, creativity, blood, sweat and tears that go into creating a new
American dance company,” said Nigel Lythgoe.

New TV Show – A Chance to Dance

As I mentioned previously, we’ll be covering the new show Chance to Dance which premieres this week on Ovation TV. It’s getting close and I’m getting quite excited to see what I think will be chock full of amazing dancing.

I’ve found a number of videos that preview A Chance to Dance and give a good look at the 2 main characters in the show: Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt. Here’s the first video to help you get a feeling for Michael, Billy and the show itself.

This next video has Michael Nunn and Billy Trevitt shopping in Texas. I hope that A Chance to Dance has as much humor as this video. It’s awesome. I do need to find the video of Michael and Billy going to the “Broken Spoke” dance hall.

This video has Simon Lythgoe offering some dance tips and comments about the music. You know how we feel about music and dancing. Although, my favorite part of the video was seeing Nigel’s son Simon.

Does anyone else enjoy watching a ballet dancer try and pole dance? Yep, Billy pole dances. He actually does quite well.

One last video that has Billy Trevitt offering dance tips. You can tell that Billy doesn’t hold back with his suggestions. I think that’s a good sign that the show is going to expose another side of the dance world that hasn’t been shown on TV that much.

So You Think You Can Dance’s Chris Koehl featured in a new TV spot: Nice Moves

It was only a matter of time until Chris Koehl of So You Think You Can Dance’s Season 8 – who made it to the Top 14 – popped up. In this case there is a new TV spot coming to the airwaves called: Nice Moves, which stars Chris Loehl, is directed by Chris Applebaum (who has directed music videos fro Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Mariah Carey, Kid Rock and otheres) and choreographed by Fatima (who has worked with Usher, Mary J. Blige, No Doubt and Aaliyah).

As a kick off for their celebration of music & dance here is a behind the scenes sneak peak of the making of Nice Moves, featuring interviews with Chris Applebaum, Fatima and Chris Koehl.

After a routine like this:

Is it really a surprise that we would see Chris pop up so soon?

Chance to Dance on Ovation Premieres August 17th

In case you missed it previously, we had the chance to attend the auditions of a new show produced by Nigel Lythgoe called Chance to Dance. Since then we’ve decided to cover the full season of Chance to Dance here on Pure SYTYCD.

For those dance fans like us, Chance to Dance premieres on Ovation TV on Friday, August 17th at 7 PM PT / 10 PM ET. You can also follow Chance to Dance on Facebook as well. Word is that they’ll be streaming the show on Facebook as well. I’ll try and get more details about the online stream and share that once I get it.

For those who don’t know anything about Chance to Dance, I think this video does a pretty good job showing a short preview of the show:

Also, Allison Holker is a part of Chance to Dance and recorded this video where she offers some really great dance tips:

I’m excited to see how this show comes together. As it says in the top video, the dancers that make it through Chance to Dance will have the opportunity to go on tour with the SYTYCD dancers. Very cool!
