SYTYCD Season 6 Music Predictions

I’m sure everyone’s as excited as I am that we don’t have to wait very long for So You Think You Can Dance this year.  I’ve been seeing ads everywhere for the new season, which gives me a thrill of excitement each time. Yet somehow, I still missed hearing about the special this past Wednesday. Thanks to Margaret for re-capping it so I didn’t feel like I completely missed out.

One of my favorite things about SYTYCD has always been the music. I’ve always discovered more new favorite songs and musicians from this show than I do from any music show like Idol. Sometimes, particular songs get tied very strongly with routines in my head and I can’t help remembering the performances wherever I am. For example, Duffy’s “Mercy,” Duffy any of the Roisin Murphy routines, “Ruby Blue” Róisín Murphy most notably at the moment, and I have a strong suspicion that Jason Mraz’s “If It Kills Me,” Jason Mraz will probably remain a memorable routine song in my head.

Of course, also interesting to me is how the choreographers and dancers can take an artist or song I don’t like and create something special around it. Pretty much any Celine Dion song, for instance. There are several memorable numbers to songs of hers that I really enjoy, but I don’t dig her otherwise.

So I’m finding myself wondering about Season 6’s music. I suspect that several of the top songs from Season 5 will crop up.  I always like seeing “Jungle Drum” Emiliana Torrini - Me and Armini - Jungle Drum on the show, though I suspect “O Fortuna” London Symphony Orchestra & Richard Hickox will probably be out, at least for the auditions.

I’m not sure I can really predict many specifics, except that some popular songs will be utilized, probably something from a contestant this year on American Idol (they already used Kris Allen’s cover of “Heartless,” Kris Allen - Season 8 Favorite Performances - Heartless (American Idol Studio Version) so why not his cover of “Ain’t No Sunshine,” which was the moment I started to take him seriously on AI?).

Well, after checking out my iTunes, YouTube and CDbaby.com favorites, I put together a bit of a list of music I’d love to see on the show. If nothing else, I’ve put together a list of some wonderful music, I think. 🙂

Been dying to see The Magnetic Fields on SYTYCD – Busby Berkeley Dreams The Magnetic Fields or The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side The Magnetic Fields

Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt Johnny Cash

Patty Griffin – something like Kite Song Patty Griffin or Rowing Song Patty Griffin or Trapeze Patty Griffin

Why not some Fleetwood Mac? Tusk Fleetwood Mac or Landslide Fleetwood Mac would be the go-tos, Tusk would be a great group routine

Set Fire to the Third Bar by Snow Patrol, featuring Martha Wainwright Snow Patrol & Martha Wainwright

Cold Cold Ground Tom Waits Tom Waits

Crying Blood by VV Brown (not at all what you’d think, listen and watch the video)

Still Have My Heart by Caitlin Crosby Caitlin Crosby

Graves by Louisiana’s Benjy Davis Project Benjy Davis Project

This funky 70s song by Dutch group Mouth & McNeal, How Do You Do Mouth & MacNeal

Save Me by Joan as Policewoman Joan As Police Woman

For some more Nina Simone action, anything would do, but I’m partial to Do I Move You Nina Simone

Mark Growden’s St. Judas would be interesting to see choreographed Mark Growden

Mason Jenning’s Lemon Grove Avenue Mason Jennings

I’d love some Jenny Owen Youngs, but her best song has an expletive in the title and throughout Jenny Owen Youngs

Something from Lagaan for Bollywood, like Chale Chalo A. R. Rahman

Alice Smith, anything, but Fake Is the New Real is a good one Alice Smith

Something from Coraline, for a Les Triplettes de Belleville flavor, like Mechanical Lullaby Bruno Coulais, The Children's Choir Of Nice, Teri Hatcher, Bernard Paganotti, Hungrarian Symphony Orchestra Budapest & Laurent Petitgirad

Lindsay Rae Spurlock (a friend, I must confess) has some great songs, but November (Real World finale) would be good Lindsay Rae Spurlock

Jezebel by Two Hours’ Traffic Two Hours Traffic

Bitter Heart by Zee Avi Zee Avi

Maybe Angus & Julia Stone’s The Best is too long and too hard to shorten, but it’d be cool to see anyway Angus & Julia Stone

Forevermore by Katie Herzig Katie Herzig

Johnny and June by Heidi Newfield Heidi Newfield

Dry Your Eyes Mate The Streets The Streets

Marked Man Mieka Pauley or her All the Same Mistakes Mieka Pauley

Theoretical Girl’s Rivals would make a girl Top 2 girls routine Theoretical Girl

I have to stop myself now. I could do this all day. I haven’t picked much that would work for hip-hop and I’m sure I’ve neglected other styles as well. So y’all will have to suggest some, too. Songs you love? Songs you think are inevitable as SYTYCD routines? What do you think?

Potential So You Think You Can Dance Season 6 Dancers

I just created a list of forgotten dancers on So You Think You Can Dance season 5. Now take a look at the list of other people who we saw a lot, but I hope will still come back on So You Think You Can Dance Season 6.

Ryan Kasprzak – I don’t think I have to explain myself here. His brother made it and he didn’t for the lamest reason Nigel has ever given. I’m not a huge fan myself, but I think it would fulfill a dream for him and I’m all for people living their dreams.

Megan Kinney – We didn’t get to know her as much as Caitlin. Probably because Caitlin was in the top 20 and she wasn’t. I don’t like her as much as Caitlin, but she’s still a nice dancer and I’d love to see her back.

Erik “Silky” Moore – I was really surprised when Erik was sent home. Check out these videos of Erik “Silky” Moore and you’ll see why I was surprised. He has some real versatility and personality and I think the show will miss a personality like Erik. Maybe next season.

Gabi Rojas – I don’t really need to explain this one. Everyone that’s watched her knows she has some unique choreography that was interesting. Can you imagine her solos?

Nobuya Nagahama – I loved this guys passion for dancing. I’m sure he wasn’t the most refined dancer, but he kind of reminded me of Hok who was good at his style, but just loved stretching himself to do other dances. Looking forward to seeing him come back and perform again.

Natalie Reid – I think that some people don’t want to see her come back, but she was so passionate last year about coming back that I hope she does it again. I like seeing people like her beat the odds or at least try. Luckily she doesn’t have to wait a whole year to try.

Sex – Oh wait No!!

Nigel Lythgoe Interview on Fox 5 Atlanta

Nigel Lythgoe was on FOX 5 Atlanta talking about auditions for SYTYCD season 6 (which premieres this fall). So You Think You Can Dance auditions are going on in Atlanta right NOW with Nigel, Mary Murphy and Lil C. In this video, Nigel says there is a lot of good hip hop and street dancing in Atlanta. He also gives us some where are they now updates on past contestants on So You Think You Can Dance Joshua, Twitch, Kherington, Neil and more. Anchor Suchita Vadlamani also asked about Nigel’s Tweet where he referred to one of the current SYTYCD season’s audition moments as “brokeback ballroom.”

Cat Deeley Interview About So You Think You Can Dance Season 5

Actors from film and television arrive for the Friends of New Yorkers For Children benefit, NYC

It’s been almost an hour since my last post about So You Think You Can Dance 2009. So, I figured I’d post a few snippets of a fancast interview with Cat Deeley. YUMMY!![excuse me]

On rumors she’s leaving the show…
To be honest, I haven’t even heard of these rumors, so you’re one-up on me. No, at the moment I am more than happy doing the show and I love it and feel very passionate about it. I am doing both season five and season six.

On whether she would ever be a judge…
Oh, god no! I have absolutely no kind of technical training whatsoever. I can see people’s star potential, which is kind of what we’re looking for. You can’t describe that, what makes somebody a star. It’s that certain quality that you can’t quite put your finger on. I can identify that. It’s when somebody walks onto the stage, and you don’t know why but you can’t take your eyes off them. Also, if there’s a particular dance that moves me, I can appreciate it. I can tell you when something’s magical, but I can’t tell you why.

On advice for potential contestants…
My advice would be to prepare your audition and be great at what you do and have confidence. I think they dancers have realized they have to bring their personality. With our show, dance is the narrative that runs through the show but the audience connects with the human element of the show. They want to know people’s stories, trials and tribulations, successes and failures. That’s what people really identify with. If you’re a funny guy, bring the humor. If you’ve got an incredibly courageous story, tell us about it. Don’t hold back.

Wonderful to know that Cat Deeley will be the host for So You Think You Can Dance Season 6 as well as SYTYCD 5.

So You Think You Can Dance Season 6 to Air in Fall 2009

I’ve now read in two different reliable sources that So You Think You Can Dance is going to have a second season in 2009. Season 6 of So You Think You Can Dance has been given a Fall time slot on Fox. It looks like the idea is for So You Think You Can Dance to bridge the Fall gap between So You Think You Can Dance and American Idol.

The other interesting part of this is that So You Think You Can Dance would then be going up against ABC’s Dancing with the Stars. This would be really interesting since many of the stars from past seasons of So You Think You Can Dance have made the bridge to being professional dancers on Dancing with the Stars (see Lacey Schwimmer, Chelsie Hightower and Dmitry Chaplin).

I couldn’t be more excited about this change. One report I read said that Fox is still waiting to see how well So You Think You Can Dance will do this summer before making it final. I guess we’ll see, but either way it’s fun to think that we’ll have a second season of So You Think You Can Dance so quickly. Summer just isn’t enough SYTYCD for me. I found where Nigel Lythgoe confirmed that Fox has announced Season 6 of So You Think You Can Dance on Fox in September. BEAUTIFUL!!
