Power Rankings SYTYCD Canada Top 12 – More of a Summary this week

Sorry I am late posting I am going out of town tomorrow… which means… I won’t ge tto see results show tomorrow. I will post a discussion post and on Monday when I get a chance to watch results I will do post on it.

ok, let’s get started – I won’t actually power rank tonight simply because I have to pack and head out of town early! SO here is tonight’s summary

It was powerful and strong, which is what I expected from Denys but was impressed with from Janick. I don’t know much about the dance, but Mary Murphy does and she was hooting and hollering – so I think it was good. Luther called Denys the strongest ballroom dancer ever on the show! Blake said Denys was his fave dancer on the show period.

As always Stacey Tookey choreographs a stunning piece. Both danced it beautifully. They got rave reviews from the judges and I can tell this week will be tough! Great jumps and spins and there was one where they went into each other like it would be a crash or a lift but they jerked to each side and joined as one – amazing!

It was spicy, hot. Both brought it – I just hope the voters call in. Edgar has been in the bottom too often. Now however, we have all fantastic dancers so it will be even tougher. They both did AMAZING lifts, spins flips and tricks BUT their last big move did NOT happen and it was pretty obvious… also in the middle her shoe was caught in dress, but she fixed it and went right into her leap – well done!

Mackenize & Amanda
Adro-Jazz – Sean Cheesman
Drumming Circle – Professional Trance –

It was, as Sean’s pieces often are, interesting and dynamic. Amanda truly is all legs and arms – but it made the spins around all the more amazing. They worked well together although there were a few moments of slight hiccps, Mackenzie shoed amazing strength lifting her upside down. It was fast and energizing. Loved the body slide at the end. Tre called it animalistic which was a great description!

I think I’ve made it clear that I feel Claudia is not very cersatile or tlaented outside of her genre. That being said, she brought it tonight. I almost believed it. Jonathan outshined her in my opinion BUT she really got it better than I expected.

There were some nice lifts. Disco is togh. I think they did well. I really love Sebastian! It is going to be tough to see someone go home – but it will happen tomorrow night (and I am so sad to miss it)

Power Rankings last night were 1/3 correct… there goes my streak… I disagree with tonight’s Bottom 3… but let’s look at the whole show…

Opening Number

Opening Routine was fun and quirky. Girls in flapper style outfits, boys in top hats and vests… loved the look. The towel throwing didn’t work as they were too out of synch but the chairs worked well.

Comments:

I really feared Kirsten and Jesse or Claudia and Edgar would be in the bottom. I don’t think, based on last night, either of them should have been and I am happy for Claudia and Edgar but really, Kirsten and Jesse did amazingly last night. Charlene and Jeff, similarily, were amazing, I put them in my Top 3!! Sad at these Bottom 3.

Solo’s – Dancing for their lives

Females

Amanda – strong movements, a bit sloppy at the end but passionate
Charlene – violent movements that didn’t quite work for me but she was nervous clearly
Kirsten – slow powerful movements.

Notes – Amanda & Charlene’s first time dancing for their lives. Charlene & Kirsten are both Vancouver girls.

Males
Denys – upbeat, entertaining, fun solo!
Jeff – another fantastic solo long legs and all over the stage
Jesse – passionate, moving, awesome!

Notes – Honestly all three did such an amazing job on their solo!!

Jean-Marc said he is disappointed in Canada for voting the best three dancers into the bottom. Based on being in the bottom more than the others, she is going home.

Jesse

Tre to wonders what Canada is thinking when they vote. She is upset with the results. Thinks all solo’s were dynamic display of talent. He broke down at the news. He made a plea to Canada to vote and change these results. I think it may be interpreted wrong, but I know where he was coming from.

Thoughts?

I just can’t believe it really… I mean, repeatedly in the bottom leads to going home but I wish Canada would vote more.

Power Rankings for SYTYCD Canada Top 18

Last Week’s Power Rankings were accurate so we will see how I do this week.

The judges main message to viewers was to VOTE!!!! So I encourage everyone tonight to please do just that… VOTE VOTE VOTE!!!

This was challenging because some of the routines were good but came from dancers who have been repeatedly in the bottom 3… so, with all things considered here are my thoughts…

Emotional Concept of struggling with eating disorders. Beautiful and powerful movements. Very strong total goose bumps awesome routine. My fave of the night.

Some amazing twists, flips and lifts I actually got goose bumps with the one major trick. I really enjoyed the routine. It was challenging and they pulled it off wonderfully.

Much harder hitting than last week. Smooth groove. She impressed me and he was predictably good in his genre. I kept moving this up and down but decided on third place. It was awesome.

It felt a bit slow for me but other than that it was really fun and sexy. The judges loved it but they seem to almost love everything don’t they? So much for critiques.

Old School Love. Lot’s of old bounce moves that brought me back. A bit off at times but totally fun and gave me a good laugh remembering when people really danced this way.

Fast and fun. Nice flips and spins. Some rocking out that made it more enjoyable to watch than most quick steps.

Slow start. Amazing lift spin, great chemistry for one week together. Goosebumps at times which usually means top 3 but I just don’t think it will happen based on their history so far. I hope they stay out of the bottom three this week, this routine was amazing! I am putting them 7th but I feel like they should be about 4th based JUST on tonight.

8. Kloe & Jonathan – West Coast Swing – Benji Schwimmer
Clocks – Vitamin String Quartet –

This was a really challenging routine that didn’t feel west coast swing. Benji is amazing and the two danced really well. It was beautiful to watch. I just think it was a bit too much that didn’t fully come together.

9. Julia & Jesse – Contemporary – Stacey Tookey

Beautiful piece by Stacey however Melissa was right it lacked connection at times and a few lifts seemed flawed. That being said I enjoyed the routine but it was tough to pick a bottom 3 and this is just how they measured up for me overall. I don’t think I’ve ever put a Tookey routine in bottom three… eek!

SYTYCD Canada Calgary & Halifax Auditions

Tonight was Calgary and Halifax Auditions. Emilie is compiling music lists AJ & I sent her and will post as soon as possible.

In the meantime, let’s look at the actual auditions…

Starting in last season’s favourite dancer, Tara-Jean’s home town of Calgary Leah Miller is outside line dancing with locals “yee haw”

Judges – Jean Marc, Tre Armstrong, Luther Brown and guest judge: Stacey Tookey.

Audition Summary:

Steven Morton – calls himself a triple threat, loves being on stage, mime, kicks, hilarious, he sang also, which was – interesting. An obvious no, and an odd opening to the show which otherwise had some great dancers.

Jo Roy – danced Hip Hop on point, a little different, risky but interesting, “fusion of styles” unique I liked her. She made it right to finals.

Devorou Scott – Cutie Patutie crushing on Tre, needs training, was sent to choreo anyways but failed miserably.

Christina Schell – From Langley BC, 19, very fun and cute. She was a nice dancer who went to chore.

Kevin Howe – Season 1 finalist cut after ballroom, didn’t come back for season 2 because his father passed away, lost 50 pounds and looks great I really like him! He went right to finals!

Jera Wolfe – Royal Winnipeg Dance School from Nova Scotia a BBOY turns Ballet dancers, i really liked him alot.

Carlena Britch – is from Vancouver and has a funky style. I think he would be good on the show. She went to choreoa nd made it to finals.

Angela Benson – Moving Story about Parents in wheelchairs sheis quirky and cute, she went to chore but didn’t make it.

Arik Pipestem – Traditional Native Music dancing in his traditional outfit with hoops. He went to choreo and made it – which shocked me. Last time he auditioned he did not make it but he has lost weight since then and trained in other areas, very likable!

Arik tried to show Leah Miller, the host, how to dance with the hoops, she had a “fake” tantrum.. she was annoying me as usual, although by the end of tonight’s show I felt differently about her, but we will get to that! It’s her whiney voice that gets on my nerves!!!

anyways, let’s continue…

Julia Harnett and Rufino Rodrigez – danced together, this woman has the most solid calve muscles I have ever seen!! She used to do ballet but now ballroom with him, both go to finals.

Nice Montage of bad dancers, again I appreciate that we don’t waste a ton of time on the terribly / joke dancers… though wait for Vancouver, Spandy Andy WILL return….

Shelaina Anderson – last year she was the snobby, selfish contestent who let down her group in finals but she is back, with shorter hair and a new maturity. She danced fabulously and I think will do much better this year.

Alex Schween – came in doing hip hop and as devestated when Luther Brown criticized her. She went to choreo and made it… I don’t think she will make the show but who knows.

Edgar Gilbert – Reyes –I really like this guy. He worked with Blake McGrath in his video. He is Smooth, fun, charismatic, has a nice look, and agood groove

Danielle Gardner – Sheis from Surrey, BC (I am bias to BC contestents sorry, Vancouver born and raised) I loved her song (LYKKE LI – TONIGHT) and I remember her from last seasons auditions… she has a Lung condition which leaves her short of breat. Since last season she has started new medication which has improved her condition… she is a beautiful dancer – she opened with a crazy twisted position and just stretched the limits – if she can keep her medical condtion under control I think she will do very well.

Gary Benthem – School Counsellor out to show his students you can do anything. He shockingly made it to choreo but not mch further, strong effort and great lesson to his students.

The second hour was HALIFAX – Auditions

Guest Judge: Dan Karaty

This is Natalie Lyons hometown and where Tara-Jean, Francis and Allie auditioned.

Yuliya Zavadska & Sharone Levit – just got immigration approved and came to audition.

Rebecca Morash – went to choreo, good audition

Curtis Jean – went to choreo, barely, and struggled. He walked off the stage during choreo in fact

Meaghan Deitrich – She had a condition when she was 16 where her knee caps dislocated. She has had surgery and dances ballet beautifully now. She went to finals.

Chris Pelrine – Cheesey Tap Dancer who did not make it through.

Krista Mitchnick – She was cute and had a good look for the show but seemed too tight for me, the judges sent her to choreo

Janaye Upshaw – I really liked her a lot. She talked about her stage mom and she did a tap routine. I thought she was awesome, the judges said she was comfortable. She went right to finals.

Catherine Turcotte – She did Ballroom well but her face bugged me, she did this puffy cheek thing. Judges called her “urban” and Last year auditioned with Vincent but this year solo – went to chore.

Leah Miller “keep warm” Boot Camp outside had dancers trying to keep warm.

Trevor Johnson – I wasn’t paying attention but he walked out of Blake boot camp so *shrugs*

Katiana Pare – lost her father and dances out her emotions, was sent right to finals.

Roxanne – the cheerleader from Toronto who forgot her routine. She was sent to choreo but didn’t make it.

Here is what changed my mind (slightly) about Leah Miller.

She did Blake Boot Camp!!!!! I was really shocked – I don’t LIKE her yet, but I don’t hate her as much ha!

Curtis – quit then had muscle cramps and dehydtration
Rebecca – yes

Tomorrow is the one I am most looking forward too – VANCOUVER!

Spandy Andy will be back (in fact he has an event at a local pub tomorrow to watch SYTYCD Canada with him – I can’t go I have to work)

SYTYCD Season 7 Finale Part 2 Music

Well…on the discussion post, I said that I might have to flip back and forth between the SYTYCD finale and the first Saints pre-season game. Well, the good news is that I won’t have to flip back and forth. The bad news is that my local FOX channel has pre-empted the SYTYCD finale in order to show the first Saints pre-season game. I won’t be able to see the show till 10:30 local time.

You have to understand that little else matters in New Orleans during football season. We love our Saints. Though, I’m a little ticked off with them at the moment.

My mom lives in Atlanta, so she’s gonna help me out with the music. If you can see the show and would like to help me, please do. 🙂

It’s all Kelly’s fault. 🙂 Our reader said:

I think we need another “What music would you like to see on the show?” post.

You see how she demanded that I do another suggested music post? Well, Kelly, here it is.

This time around, I didn’t make any big thing out of the assignment. All weekend, I basically just listened to music like I always do, but since I knew I was gonna do this, I dropped songs into a special file and promised myself when I got to 10, I’d post.

Well, it’s time to post. And this time, I’m gonna go one step forward and say who I think would best choreograph to these songs. Well, some of them. You may have to help me with the others.

Suggested Music for SYTYCD

1. Project Jenny, Project Jan ft. So Percussion’s “You Said” – This would make a great Wade routine.

2. Kate Earl “Impossible – It’s got Travis written all over it.

3. Beck’s “Everybody’s Gotta Learn Sometime” from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind I’m not sure who would do the best with this one. It could probably be used by Dmitry or Louis or Toni Redpath in a creative ballroom routine OR, it could be contemporary a la Travis.

4. Jill Barber’s “Goodnight Sweetheart” – Has a country flavor to it, but might be a good Mia Michaels or Stacey Tookey routine. Am I crazy???

5. Paolo Nutini “Last Request” – Totally Travis. Well, I thought this was my brilliant idea, but actually, this song was used on the last season of AU, choreographed by Paul White and Anthony Ikin. Check it out:

They could totally just have this routine on Season 7. Lauren and Kent. Lauren and Billy.

6. Kate Earl’s “Cry Sometimes” – Nappytabs or, strangely, Mandy Moore

7. James Morrison’s “Better Man” – Travis again. Or Mia. Or Stacey Tookey.

8. Sydney Wayser’s “Ghost Song” – Darn. It’s not available on iTunes. Her other song “Carousel” is, though. Anyway, I envision jazz by Sonya or even maybe some funky neo Broadway by Joey Dowling. Or crazy crazy by Wade. Check out the YouTube video below (and download the song for free from Daytrotter).

9. My Brightest Diamond’s “Apples” – Either Wade or Mia.

10. Eminem ft. Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie” – Lil’ C or Shane Sparks. I just heard this song coming home from work today. I usually don’t like rap or hip-hop very much. But this one shook me. I’d love to see what either of these choreographers made of it.
