So You Think You Can Dance Top 16 Quick Hits
“Are we getting a little sick of Mary Murphy? YES, WE ARE!” Credit to kdbennett I think someone should go through and count how many times Mary Murphy says “Yes, we are!” Does she do that to reassure herself that other people agree with her? Maybe I should stop writing about Mary. She makes me sick.
Caitlin and Jason have got to be the prettiest couple ever on SYTYCD.
Is Randi Evans mormon? Springville, UT is like 98% mormon so I’d think she is. I can’t imagine how she felt about the butt routine. I’m watching the Utah newspapers for an article about this.
In a surprise for me, Kayla and Kupono actually put together a very nice routine with nice lines. Probably not enough to get votes, but I’m surprised that Kupono didn’t bother me more.
Janette Manrara enjoys being a loan officer? She’s the best looking loan officer I’ve ever seen.
Was it just me or did Brandon look like he had 2 locks in his locking. It felt a little awkward and almost spastic.
Will Melissa and Ade ever stop shocking me with good performances? I keep thinking their going to fall off the cliff sooner or later. So far they’ve shocked me with how good they’ve been every week. Only couple that I think has gone 3 for 3 on awesome dances.
Ok, I’m off the Asuka and Vitolio wagon (can’t be a band wagon since they never were on it). I really wanted to like Asuka and Vitolio. Not sure why, but I thought I should like them both. Just not happening for me anymore. I’m done.
Karla has become my favorite dancer of this season. I can’t think of much I don’t like about her.
Jonathan might have become my least favorite dancer. He just looked awkward.
The judges slammed Jeanine and Phillip, but I don’t think America will. They got lucky with a pretty interesting routine by Tyce.
i simply have to talk about the couples now.
karla and jonathan are a couple who’s constantly in danger. jonathan is kind of pulling karla down, especially on the hip hop yesterday. he is sort of the reason karla cannot shine through. if america does not make their own judgement and follow the judges, which is most likely, they’ll definitely be in the bottom 3.
asuka and vitolio are an okay couple. vitolio has not proven to be the full-of-character dancer as the judges and producers said him to be, not yet. i agree with you john. i tried really hard to like this couple, but i give up. unless they bring it, i really think they are going to bore me. š®
melissa and ade. i think they’re going to be one of my favourite couples on the show. they are slowly climbing their way up to be the best couple of the season. they bring it every single week, and they have the extreme good luck to draw great routines and choreographers out of the hat every week. they’re a force to be reckoned with.
janette and brandon. they’re also a couple on the top. both bring exceptional performance and character. these 2 going to stay long too, hopefully. very dynamic dancers.
kayla and kupono. we are yet to see what they have. but their routine yesterday was pretty good.
caitlin and jason. they are a pretty couple, yes i do agree. but they do not bring it every week. i expected them to kill the pasa doble yesterday. but it was a little off for me. either they are still finding their connection or they are not as good as i thought them to be. and i hate to be disappointed. so i hope they bring better dancing next week. caitlin is kind if pulling jason back, i think.
jeanine and philip. they are the couple with one of the better connections. another couple is melissa and ade and janette and brandon. philip may not have the technique, but he has the biggest fanbase of the lot. and jeanine is garnering many fans of her own too. love their broadway routine this week. it was adorable.
yesterday was a disappointment. i don’t want to go back to my initial thought that season 4 was the best. season 5 better bring it or i’ll really believe what they’re saying about it being the lousier cousin of season 6. havent been really impressed so far.
the judges were also a little off yesterday. tony basil’s not my favourite judge of all time. and nigel’s PMSing due to his painkillers after surgery was really bad. it might have really caused a couple of good dancers to be in the bottom 3 tomorrow. :S
come on, season 5 has got to bring it!! š
I was a little disappointed too last night. The only routine that I thought was really good was Jeanette and Brandon, and that was probably bc I really enjoy watching Hip Hop. At no time during the night did I think, WOW that was a really amazing routine…these 2 will deft not be in the bottom three.”
We’ll see what the rest of America thinks tonight….
OK, so Melissa and Ade have been my favs sense day 1–she represents for us more “seasoned” dancers. š She’s absolutely brilliant and he’s so strong and full of life! I will def go on tour to see the both of them this year if (WHEN) they make top 10!!
In terms of the others…Jason is still a fav, but I’ve never warmed to Caitlyn. Cute girl, cute personality, but her dance style to me is very boring. I don’t feel that she draws my eye when she dances, unless it’s because she’s not bringing it hard enough. I kinda wish she would have been paired with someone else–like Jonathan–so we could see whether she could carry him like Karla can.
I thought Philip and Jeanine’s routine was so much fun! My hubby and I were shocked at the critiques. I guess they’re right about Philip’s technique, but I was so mesmerized by the performance and the unison and chemistry between them that I didn’t notice his jazz runs were not light enough. I think that routine def gets them top 5 couples.
In terms of my predictions for bottom three, they are….
1. Karla and Jonathan: He’s just done all he can…poor Karla. She’s so frickin’ talented!!! I hope she kills her solo and sticks around.
2. Asuka and Vitolio: I like Vitolio, and they’re chemistry and backstory may have saved him yet again (and I really liked the routine, too). BUT…compared to the other couples, they’re just not as strong.
3. Kayla and Kupono OR Jason and Caitlyn: Both of these routines were not very memorable. I thought both could be forgotten. TBH, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE a Jason and Kayla pairing (can you say speechless???), so I hope they all make it to the top so we can see that pairing.
I think Phil/Jeanine, Melissa/Ade, Randi/Evan, and Brandon/Janette are safe this week for sure. I’d be surprised otherwise.
OK, so those are my comments. I am so glad that there is a spot like this to discuss SYTYCD, by the way. My husband gets tired of my constant analysis, I think!!!
AGREE LAST NIGHT CONTIUED TO DISAPPOINT AFTER PROMISE OF FIRST WEEK DONT KNOWIFITS THE CHOREOGRAPHY THATS NOT INTERESTING OR THE DANCERS ARE NOT THAT GOOD .AGREE MRY MURPHY IS NOW GETTING VERY TIRESOME AND TONI BASIL SUCKS AS A JUDGE ALMOST AS BAD AS DEBBIE ALLEN SEASON FOUR SO FAR EXCEPT FOR WEEK ONE WAS SO MUCH BETTER
I’m so glad that other people can see how talented Karla really is. It gives me some hope for her future.
Mary Murphy needs some help on how to give feedback without yelling or screaming. Whenever she speaks I always get really embarassed. It gets really hard to take anything she says seriously these days.
Also did anyone notice Randi’s shirt when they were learning the dance routine with Mia. It says “Unitard Girl” pictured with a female superhero in a unitard on the front. I immediately fell in love with it.
*getting* sick of mary? i’ve been there for 2 years, ever since she became a permanent judge. i could handle her in small doses, but this is ridiculous! good thing i have a DVR and can fly right by her comments!
Amen to the comment about Mary. I think she said “YES YOU DID!!” or some variation of that at LEAST a bajillion times. I never noticed how frequently she says that until yesterday. She seems like a nice lady ‘n all but you can only take so much of her every Wednesday.
I adore Karla. Wish she had a better partner!
I’m always eager for the show to get to the point where they start mixing up the couples. This season I think there are more unbalanced couples than balanced ones. For me, the worst balance is Evan and Randi; I think Randi is holding Evan back in an almost painful way. (But I admit to having a definite bias in favor of Evan!) I definitely agree that Karla and Jonathan are very poorly matched, too, with K vastly outshining J; the same is true of Jeanine and Philip. (Am I the only one who really, REALLY doesn’t get all the Philip-love?)
Perhaps oddly, I think Asuka and Vitolio are very well matched as dancers… I just don’t like them much. Vitolio’s story is very compelling, but I just don’t think he’s the best dancer ever. Asuka I just revile. Simply cannot wait for her to be voted off.
I guess the choice to keep Mary as a permanent judge was to provide SYTYCD with the same sort of “good-natured,” quirky, “cute” bimbo-type judge that American Idol has in Paula Abdul. Which is fine, okay, not my taste, but okay. But seriously… couldn’t she tone it down just a little bit? Must it be constant? *sigh*
I agree about Toni Basil not being the best judge, but she’s still better than Mary Murphy. Of course, you don’t want to get me started with Mary, she’s the worst. You should hear her Las Vegas fox commercials. Makes me want to not watch Fox News in Las Vegas. Robin, if they were going for āgood-natured,ā quirky, ācuteā and “bimbo” then I think the only one they got was the last one. Blah! She might even be a nice person, but she’s just annoying.
Vijay,
I didn’t see the shirt. I must check. Maybe I should create one and add it to the SYTYCD store: http://www.zazzle.com/puretvnetwork*
Well, it was a down week, but the show usually goes through up and down weeks. Here’s hoping for a little more wow next week.
I love, love everyone’s comments on here!!! So spot on! John, Beth and Robin – cannot agree with you more! Karla is so held back by Jonathan, who I have to say is the weakest dancer left! She was hitting hard at the beginning of the routine, then you saw her look at the corner of her eye and she had to draw back to match Jonathan’s movements! OY! Also, the hip-hop choreography this season seems to be weak for the most part! Please judges, save Karla and Jason = they are my dream pairing!
RECAP:
1. Karla & Jonathan
Style/Choreographer/Song: Hip Hop/Dave Scott/”By My Side” by Jadakiss feat. Ne-Yo
Once again, Hip-Hop strikes! It is my thought that the producers are confusing the brilliance of Tab & Napoleonās lyrical hip-hop routines last season with āOh, letās get sub-par hip-hop choreographers and make them do TWO dances a night!ā And because of that, Hip-Hop is to Season 5 as the Waltz was to past seasons. Or Toni Basil is to streets. Karla started very strong and then saw what the rest of us did- Jonathan sucking @$$. So she slowed down & hit softer. And Jonathan, gymnast-senses tingling, did a backflip to show that he should be on this show still (or at least the eventual Step Up/Bring It On crossover film). They are probably bottom 3 and if they are, then he needs to go and they save Karla for a better partner. And they stop 2 hip-hop dances from the same person per night.
2. Asuka & Vitolio
Style/Choreographer/Song: Jazz/Mandy Moore/”Heartbreaker” by Pat Benatar
Asuka has a soul and she cries real tears! Mandy Mooreās hair and iPod show up each week in a Delorian (driving down Toniās street) from 1984 to deliver āinspiration.ā Seriously, this dance sucked. Costumes were awful, the steps were not as hard as the video package made it seem, and the musicā¦sigh. Bottom three again. But Vitolio seems strong, so I am actually willing to sacrifice Asuka so we get a Karla/Vitolio pairing.
3. Melissa & Ade
Style/Choreographer/Song: Rumba/Tony Meredith/”Emotion” by Destiny’s Child
Magic. I watched it twice. Ade is growing on me. Melissa is amazing. My only critique (since Iām in a judgy mood) is that Melissaās face isnāt always in character. Sheās BEAUTIFUL, but when she gets really into the dance, sheās more in the dance than the character. She also stops with her hands sometimes. Sheās almost Katie-level to me, but with Katie, she danced all the way through her fingertips so there was an intensity and a commitment to both dance and character. But this is a pair that I really like. And that dress would get plenty of attention as Melissa walked down Toniās street.
4. Janette & Brandon
Style/Choreographer/Song: Hip Hop/Dave Scott/”What A World” by Common
THIS should have been Karla & Jonathan with Karla in the hip-hop and Jonathan in the Cher role. That said, Brandon rocked it out. Seriously. He Stepped Up 2 the Street! Toni Basilās street would like him to dance on it. Janette was good, but Brandon was amazing. His character work was fantastic too.
5. Kayla & Kupono
Style/Choreographer/Song: Viennese Waltz/Jean-Marc Genereux (& France)/”Sweet Dreams for You” by Jewel
Ok, Mac, this is your girl. She was good, but Kupono needs to find Toni Basil Ave and walk off the stage. He, Jonathan and Phillip canāt do lifts, and so they need to go before the Top 10 or some girl is going to get HURT. I donāt really understand why the Hot Tamale Train became the Hot Tamale Horse & carraige because that was a sloooooow dance. Yes, it was pretty, and Kayla did great (another awesome female), but Hot Tamale Train? I think Mary realized her Botox was keeping her from screaming too much and she need to shake Nigel the Grinch out of his foul mood. And Toni Basil said something inconsequetial. Probably something about Mickey and how fine he is he blows her mind. Oh, Micky.
(somewhere around here was a FABULOUS commercial for GLEE. Can that show just start showing episodes now? Iāll watch it again in the Fall. Seriously, if anyone gets bootlegs of this before it airs, SHARE!)
6. Randi & Evan
Style/Choreographer/Song: Contemporary/Mia Michaels/”Koop Island Blues” by Koop feat. Ane Brun
Fab.U.Lous. Weird and beautiful. The kids can leave the Shire and go straight to Broadway (the stage, not the street, Toni, calm down). Evan is fantastic and Randi really upped her game (and her behind). They both committed. This dance I remember big time. Love it.
7. Caitlin & Jason
Style/Choreographer/Song: Paso Doble/Jean-Marc & France Genereux/”O’Fortuna (from “Carmina Burana”)” by Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg & Kurt Prestel
Michael said it best: Why is He-Man dancing with Slave Leia? I love O Fortuna, but combined with the costumes and Caitlinās gyrations, I felt like I was still in Vegas (which made my tummy go NOOOOOOO). By the way, Toni, Vegas has a very famous street called a āStrip,ā which is also a form of dance. Did you invent that too? This couple is my other bottom 3 and I could stand to lose Caitlin for a Karla/Jason pair, by the power of Grayskull!
8. Jeanine & Phillip
Style/Choreographer/Song: Broadway/Tyce D’Orio/”Moses” from “Singing In The Rain”
I adore Singing in the Rain and I thought this was a good representation of Donald OāConnor and Grace Adlerās mom (of TVās Will & Grace). I am, of course, speaking of the incomperable Debbie Reynolds, who the more I think about it, I now want to see be a guest judge on the show. She can shove Toni Basil back to her street and then make OUTRAGEOUS comments. Someone please make this happen. Now. Thank you. Back to the dance. Phillipās pants ripping distracted me because I wondered if he was wearing boxers, briefs, or a dancerās belt. We, of course, got the answer to that thanks to our (and by āourā I mean Macās) BFF Cat, who looked like she came from the Island of Themyscira, home of Wonder Woman. Phillip could have committed a bit more to the walk/dance parts, but Jeanine nailed it while looking like a fabulous pin-up girl! Applause!
Iām worried that itās week 3 and the gorls are OBVIOUSLY out-performing the guys, the choreographers are not bringing their best, and there have been so few memorable routines. I miss crying more often from emotional dances rather than frustration.
Ok, so those are my thoughts? How about your? āStreeet, street, streeeeeet! I got an award for streeeee-gurk!ā Shut up, Toni Basil, I just beat you with a good old-fashioned cobblestone.
Regarding Mary: She was so much more composed and well-spoken in person. I, too, wish she didn’t seem to be going to Paula Abdul (as in, what? huh?) school of criticism. She really struck me as knowing her stuff and generous to the dancers and that does come across more often than not on the show, but it’d hard to pick out in all the screaming. š
Here’s my little breakdown of the performances:
Karla & Jonathan
Why is he on this show? Seems like the casting went a fit too far this year, because he is just not good enough. I personally thought Karla rocked that routine, she was really groovin. Jonathan just looked awkward and….more awkward. I would bet that he goes home tomorrow. I’m glad to see Dave Scott back, I liked both his routines tonight. Just wish Jonathan could have kept up with it. ugh.
Asuka & Vitolio
I like Mandy Moore, but what’s with these song choices?? First we get Richard Marx(?) and then Pat Benetar. Now Im not hating on Pat, not at all. But that song just didn’t drive that dance. This is a couple I’ve wanted to like since the beginning, but they have come up short, for me. Their personalities just haven’t shone through their performances. I haven’t said WOW in their 3 routines so far. I think they will be in trouble too.
Melissa & Ade
I like them a lot. I didn’t quite feel the fire that the judges were feeling about this routine, though it was good. They raved and raved about Ade, and i really like him, but I thought he seemed a bit stiff at moments. Jean Marc cracks me up though. They are definitely a force in this competition. When Nigel said that Ade definitely provided something nice for Melissa to “undulate against” i almost lost it. that was so funny. and soooo true š
Janette & Brandon
I really liked this routine. it didn’t WOW me, but they are a great pairing and great dancers! I thought Dave’s concept was really cool too. I loved that part when they froze for a few seconds. WHEN ARE BRANDON AND MIA GOING TO GET PAIRED UP!? i can’t wait for that. I hope he kills that routine. haha.
Kayla & Kupono
I love her. She kills everything she does. That’s my bias because she’s probably my favorite. I can’t wait for her to get some contemporary and hip hop. maybe another cool jazz number. Kupono worries me with her, because im nervous he will bring her down. I like him, but im not sure hes strong enough. I agree when the judges said he didnt have much substance in his solo. People are comparing him to Mark, but Mark was such a stronger dancer. and quirkier. I hope Kupono can step it up. I like his personality, just wish his dancing was stronger. I liked the routine. the backdrop was really cool. and i thought they both danced very well. graceful. hopefully since it got put on the tamale train, they will stay out of trouble. i’d hate to see any of them, esp Kayla, go home!!
Randi & Evan
Yay Mia! she may bug me as a person sometimes, but you can’t deny that she does great routines. Now….this wasn’t a couple that i was all about from the beginning. I’ve never really been an Evan fan. I thought Randi shined in this routine though. She did great. Nigel was right that this was a routine to remember. Probably just because it was all about the butt and no one can forget the “butt routine”
Caitlin & Jason
I like them. a lot. Maybe it was just because they came out the first week with a BANG with that bollywood, but they haven’t wow’ed me again these last two weeks. Hopefully that first week wasn’t their peak. They are a strong couple and both great dancers. I hope they can step it up. You can’t doubt their chemistry though. the end of that paso doble—-whew!!
Jeanine & Phillip
I’m kind of over Phillip….i like him, but he needs to show that he can do something else than his own popping, etc. He’s obviously great at what HE does. I think Jeanine is great. First week, people were thinking he was carrying her, but I think its definitely the other way around. This routine was fun. I dont know, broadway is kind of boring to me sometimes. i feel like there is not much dancing in it.
stray observations š
I agree with beth…a kayla/jason pairing would be AWESOME! hopefully they make it to top 10. they are 2 of my favorites!!
this season needs to step it up! I feel like the last 2 weeks have been a bit of a let down. I don’t know…
Tony Basil didn’t say much -critique wise-, except the same thing over and over. “you didnt let your technique get in the way” or some other variation of that.
I love when Nigel gets boo’ed
“and there is a butt…”
i loved when Jeanine pulled Cat down on the couch. that was funny
via Mochi – Mandy Mooreās hair and iPod show up each week in a Delorian (driving down Toniās street) from 1984 to deliver āinspiration.ā hahaha…..so true. What happened Mandy Moore??!? We need you to bring back some of that magic from say….the Neil/Sabra table routine? that one is one of my favorites!
Mary Murphy.
Where are Tabitha and Napleon?? Whaa….bring them back! I’m waiting for this seaon’s Bleeding Love. “Mad” was good…but not quite BL standard, in my opinon.
i love everyones’ comments on “YES IT WAS!”
Mochi ~
I love you. You are fabulous. Please post recaps like that every week. š
